Sound Soldiers is generally accepted as the "starting point" of Grüvis Malt's sound. Its release helped cement the futurock fan base in New England and push the band into a national market. The album has an all over bubbly feel to it - funk-heavy bass laden arrangements with very audible jazz and hip hop influences. The album is pop-ier than any of Grüvis Malt's subsequent work, and has a more positive outlook. Vocally it is wordy and colorful, albeit a bit goofy. The theme throughout is one of integrity, hope, and scorn for commercial radio.
